John Bordenkircher was clearly robbed in this ranking! He deserves much higher than 69th, although he's so humble, he'd never say so himself. He broke the long-standing school record @ Dixon High School that had been set in 8 games; he broke it in just 6 games! So fun to watch!
ReplyDeleteI 100% agree with the above statement regarding John Bordenkircher. I certainly would have him in the top 20 at least
DeleteWould have to agree
Delete3 of the top 10 were Oregon Ducks!
ReplyDeleteStanley mcneal got robed in this 100 best he should have been some were on the list he played all three sports as a freshman on varsity baseball shortstop 3 years championship basketball 1974-1975 guess what they had no home gym 2 loses bill cartwright elkgrove wait quarterback all metro took football to playoffs 1975 5 touchdown passes 21for 29 also started in optimist game what were people thinking he was as good as lot players he was a hot dog called his own plays in football leader in basketball an baseball most talent out of grant high school ever he lost 2 games basketball 1 in football threw 5td for 360 yards punting 47,6 per game an batted 422 avg.how did you miss him I played with him he called his own plays lost one game never ever will that happened one more 63 yard punt in allstar game kicked extra points to check for your self who ever pick the list the boy was good an he new it
ReplyDeleteAnthony brewer from natomas high was a damn good safty
DeleteAnthony Brewer are 18 tackles a game for Natomas High first Varsity year 1996-97 he got into trouble and missed the last 4 games 6'6" 218 pound safety ran 4.4
DeleteAsk Ontario Smith Dante Stallworth Chad Elliott or Lance Briggs who the best running back they ever seen play between 95 to 97 & i guarantee the name Lawrence Raynor Jr. is mentioned... check the stats & records then tell me who Grant's only lost to During their two section title run which would a been 3 but Raynor was denied a transfer to Grant High school in 98.
ReplyDeleteYeah seems like more of a who had a bigger name after high school contest than actual talent & stats on the field
DeleteVery true that can be the only reason Tedy Bruschi Roseville DL 6-1 240 1989-90 was given top billing I saw three of his games and he would not even be a top three linebacker from what I saw.
DeleteNo Kevin Tennerson??? What a joke Nate Ray #48 check your stats & who won those championships it wasn't Nate Ray. Tennerson another beast RB who should be near the top of this list.
ReplyDeleteI love all the comments on here.. Not one person mentioned I have ever heard of and follow sac football for years... We all have our favorites.. I'm sure there were people that seen my name and did not think I should be on this list...it's definitely causes conversation...
DeleteYup, i tottaly agree. When you say best athletes in sac history, kevin tennerson has to be in the the top ten easily.

DeleteI played against you Avery. You belong on the list! Didn't you average like 9 yards/carry?!?DeVore, Galt, c/o 1995.
DeleteTennerson led Mesa Verde to the section championship while destroying teams every time he touched the ball. He should be on this list!
DeleteCheckout stats for RB Antonio Bumpers played his Junior year behind Devonte Booker at Grant HS. Finished his Senior year at Inderkum HS as a starter at FB he broke all of Inderkums rushing, scoring, TD's and all purpose yards records in one year.
ReplyDeleteTerrance Mitchell, Steve Jones, Ricky Reynolds, Adrian Ross there is a couple more cats, that could be argued, to be in the top 100 James Donaldson and basketball
ReplyDeleteMarc hicks should have been top 5! Greatest running back in the SJS section .
ReplyDeleteVisibly absent are Albert Hollis and Paul Pinegar. Keith Lewis, Fausto Portillo, Thompson bros from Grant?

ReplyDeleteThis is Joe Davidson from The Sacramento Bee. PLEASE notice that the list was initially published in 2000, so all these names of players AFTER that year...come on.
ReplyDeleteAND...we polled 15 coaches in 2000, active, retired, and if a player wasn't mentioned, he didn't make the list.
How do you explain Folsom's Virgil Carter not
Deletemaking the cut? Class of 67...BYU...NFL
Vigil Cart NFL deserved it.. Seems like the people who voted didn't see many games in the early 60s
DeleteSome great players. Defensive and tight end Stuart George Johnston could have been on the list. He was a two-time all-metro All Star and had a reputation as the hardest hitter in Northern California at the time. But everybody can't make the list. I think they did an awesome job putting this list together. I've been watching Sacramento high school football for 50 years and these are all great players.

ReplyDeleteI did not see Donald Rogers name, and if he is not on that list no one should be.
ReplyDeleteDon Rogers did not make first team Bee All Metro as a senior. In boiling it down, we had to make tough choices
DeleteI agree 100% Reggie too!
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% Reggie too!
ReplyDeleteMarkell Gallow played for Sac High early 2000 to 2003. He was the truth. Tragic almost fatal accident almost ended his life but ended his ability to continue playing professionally but ask Ontarrio Smith and he will tell you Markell Gallow was the truth.

ReplyDeleteYour list showed Benny Crocco as one of best 100,on that Sac Hi team was Roosevelt Beatty who was one of best running backs in the state of California next to Dick Bass.
ReplyDeleteNo one was next to Dick bass in the 50's or their after in terms of greatness. I saw him at Vellejo HS

ReplyDeleteThanks Devote, it was 14.6 yrd per carry.thank you. Much respect
ReplyDeleteDevore
DeleteJoe it's time to update the list. People love this stuff and your one of the best of keeping sports history in the area alive. UPDATE PLEASE.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Brian Bedford, QB out of McClatchy who went to Cal?
ReplyDeleteThis blog is really helpful to deliver updated educational affairs over internet which is really appraisable. I found one successful example of this truth through this blog. I am going to use such information now.āļāļĨิāļāļุāļāļāļāļĨ

ReplyDeleteYou rated Jim Sarti way too low as he has always been mentioned in the same breath as Bricka Ragster and John Cartwright
ReplyDeleteTerry Spivey PLACER WR/ RET 1978-80. Calhi 1st Team All State. Led Hillmens best team to #1 State rank. Also two time Sup Cal. Lit up Optimist game vs the best of sac big school players. Rediculous speed no one could cover him. Another great Hillmen left off the list huge power FB Dave Grayson 1st Team All State, Sup Cal, back to back CIF title teams in 75 and 76. Finally Eddie Vanderdoos currently with the Raiders. All American ranked #1 DT prospect in nation coming out of hs. You really going to leave big Eddie off that list.... c'mon now.
ReplyDeleteShame on us for not having a player who played in the 2010s on a list compiled in 2000. Come on now!
DeleteHi there! Nice post! Please tell us when I will see a follow up!
ReplyDeleteyoutube blockchain
AUSTIN COLLIE...HOW IS HE NOT ON HERE?!?!
ReplyDeleteAn utter outrage! List was compiled in 2000. He played in the 2000s and made our Sacbee decade team for the 2000s and was Player of that Decade. COME ON NOW!
DeleteI should be on this list ! If Vince Delgado and Bobby Dawson his on this list ! Out if the 3 I’m the only one to make Firts team all state the same tear in 1983 with over 2,258 all purpose yds and scoring 28 tds that year . Wow!
ReplyDeleteI agree! Mark Young was one of the most exciting high school football players I've ever seen. He's a class act!
DeleteFirst team cal hi sports all state team !
ReplyDeleteI totally agree Mark was the most exciting player to come out of Corodva and they had more than share of them
DeleteDeMario Evans, Grant HS 1988-92 one of the best athletes to come out of that school.
ReplyDeleteBen Griffin was a great two sport star at Luther Burbank. One of the fastest players I've ever seen. He dominated the competition in both Football and Basketball from 1993-1995. At one point he was ranked 44th on the Sacramento Bee Poll.
ReplyDeleteGood grief, people! Must keep in mind that this list was published in 2000 - so how could we possibly get people who played after that? This list was also compiled on nominations of a ton of coaches, active and retired.
ReplyDeleteGary Dushane from Mira Loma 1968, started the 26 game winning streak in football, played as all-county QB all star game, was starting guard in basketball, and was a scratch golfer on the golf team that won many sectional awards. Granted scholarships to New Mexico where he is now a community leader and icon.
ReplyDeleteGood list! The 90's had a lot of talent come out of the Sac area. Proud to say I played against or with a lot these kats! Good times!
ReplyDeleteI deserve to be on the list. I averaged 24.7 yards per touch and played both ways in the optimist game scoring the game winner at Wr. Zeth Strusis 1992 Golden Sierra HS. We had 500 kids and we played Center, Bear River and Folsom in League, beating Folsom my senior year first time ever in our school history. We were 3 Rd in the nation at Butte in 94&95. Love please zethanstrusis@yahoo.com
ReplyDelete1973 mira loma 22 and 0 team who made coaches All American, All City, started in n s shriners game. Check it out Randy Mcgilvray
DeleteIn the early 70s Mira Loma went 22-0, won Nt Cal play off great team with Brown Parish, I was a Linebacker and Split end at Mira Loma. I earned Coaches All American and All City honors, selected and played in both Optimus and Shriners games, recruited by USC, Washington just to mention a few. Played at OSU for 2yrs.I am not sure what you have to do make this list?? It is all good. I was just wondering how you picked the list thanks McG
ReplyDeleteMira Loma produced some great players late 70's early 80's, Brett Fraga, Dave Samas, David Burke and Rick Gillie under coach Gerry Kundert and Coach Don Brown and the infamous wing T offense.
ReplyDeleteThere was a player from Grant High, Elgin Fontaine. 3 sport star Football, Baseball, Basketball...D1 scholarship in football only after playing two years of organized HS Football. Made all 3 Sacramento Optimist All-Star games. Never came off the field on football (Qb, Safety, Punter, PAT, and Field goal kicker) maybe the only player to ever...throw a TD, run a TD, kick a field goal and get an interception in the same game. If your talking HS athlete...he was that guy. Great names on the 100 ððū
